According to www.teensuicide.us, one big problem regarding teenagers today in the United States is teenage suicide. What would make teenagers kill themselves? The most common cause of teenage suicide is depression. A teenager may feel hopeless or feel like they are trapped in a life they cannot handle. Other factors that could contribute to teen suicide are parents fighting, young relationships, rejections by friends, peers or even girlfriends/boyfriends, feelings of worthlessness, death of a loved one close to the teenager, peer pressure or bullying. An example of a young relationship going wrong is Romeo and Juliet. The cause of Romeo and Juliet’s death was they couldn’t be together because of the feud between their families.
Teen suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15-24. 19.3% of high school students has seriously considered killing themselves. 14.5% of high school students actually made plans of killing themselves. 900,000 youth plan their suicides during a period of major depression. Girls think about attempted suicide twice as much as boys, but boys are actually four times more likely to actually die by killing themselves. Girls try killing themselves by over dosing on pills or cutting, while boys may use guns, jump from great heights or hang themselves. Another example applying to methods used to commit suicide is from the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo killed himself with poison which is known for a quick death, but on the other hand Juliet used a more painful and slow method by stabbing herself in the heart with Romeo’s dagger.
It maybe difficult to notice teen suicide warning signs from normal teenage behavior, because the signs are common. Some of the warning signs are lack of eating, change in personality, difficulty concentrating, lack of sleep, problems being bullied, giving away their belongings that meant a lot to him/ her complaining of being sick all the time or expresses the thought that no one cares. One warning sign that was from the play Romeo and Juliet was when Juliet told Friar Lawrence, “ Help me or I will kill myself.” Another warning sign from the play Romeo and Juliet was when Romeo went to Friar Lawrence and said, “O, tell me, Friar, tell me, In what vile part of this anatomy Doth my name lodge? Tell me, that I may sack The hateful mansion.”
There maybe some ways to help if you suspect that your teenager may be thinking about suicide. Talk to your teenager about suicide ask him/her if he/she has ever thought about suicide. Try not to be judging. Show love to your teenager make sure that he/she knows that you love him/her and that you are there to help him/her with problems. Had Juliet had an open relationship with her parents she would have been comfortable in telling them that she was already married. Therefore, she wouldn’t have to visit the Friar for unsuccessful plan. Listen to your teenager encourage him/her to talk about his/her feelings. Listen and try to understand, but don’t be judgmental. If you suspect your teenager to be suicidal seek professional help.
Friar Lawrence was the only one she can go to for help because he was the last person she could go to for help. The parents were no use to her because they didn’t like Romeo’s family. Juliet tried to seek help from Friar Lawrence, but instead of helping it caused them to commit suicide.
